OFFICIAL RULES / CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

NO PURCHASE NEEDED TO ENTER.

Technical Guidelines

Videos and Posters must be submitted by upload at www.moproject.com
All submissions must be original work completed by youth ages 13-18 (each a "Team Member") and exclusively owned by the Youth submitting the entry (the "Team Leader"). Youth may not use copyrighted material from other sources in any amount (no samples, no remixes, no plagiarism, no "fair use"). Using copywritten material or the original work of people not on your team may result in disqualification and removal of work from the website.

Youth must be legal residents of California. All Youth 13-17 must have an Adult Ally in order to enter. A specific type of relationship between an Adult Ally and Youth is not required - for example, they could be teachers, mentors, family members, case managers, or other. Adult Allies are responsible for verifying the age, CA residence, and name of the Youth. Youth must also have permission of his or her parent or legal guardian. By entering, Youth represents that he or she has such permission. Contest organizers will contact parents or legal guardians of Finalists. Youth who do not have permission from their parent or legal guardian may be disqualified and their work removed from the website.

Youth can work in teams, but one Youth must be designated as "Team Leader." Teams can create and enter more than one project so that each team member can apply as a 'Team Leader'. Team Leaders will upload/enter the videos on the site. All prizes will be given to the Team Leader - it is up to Team Leaders to share prizes (other than travel) with team members as they see fit.

Upon starting the registration process through the Website, the Team Leader will be required to provide his or her first name, a unique username, a password, an email address, and his or her date of birth. Team Leaders should also list all Team Members who helped on the project or appeared in the project, their emails, and dates of birth. As a condition of eligibility, all Team Leaders must complete all aspects of this registration process and are responsible for correctly identifying all members of the team. Team Leaders who fail to credit substantial collaborations or contributions by others may be disqualified for plagiarism and have their work removed from the website and/or be asked to return their prizes or cash equivalent to the Contest Organizers.

Entries must be in one of the following forms, each of which will be one Contest Category:

  • PSA (30 seconds or 60 seconds - exact length)
  • Short Story or Animation (3 minutes or less)
  • Short Documentary and News (3 minutes or less)
  • Original Spoken Word or Music (3 minutes or less)
  • Poster (print size 24x36 inches, 5mb or less)

PSA: Stands for a Public Service Announcement. These are a type of commercial - but they don't sell a product. PSA's deal with community problems and solutions. They inspire us to take action.

Short Story or Animation: This is the category for all original fiction work. Tell a story. Use actors or puppets or clay to create characters who are facing a challenge.

Short Documentary and News: Videos in this category show real people and real situations. If you are showing life as it really is, this is the category for you.

Original Spoken Word or Music: Videotape yourself or a friend performing an original piece. They can be speaking, singing, or rapping.

Poster: You can make a poster with paint, pen, crayons - whatever you want - and then photograph it so that you can upload it. Or you can use computer software to design a digital poster and upload that. Either way, show us your design skills.

The entry MUST have been conceived by the Team and the entry must be the sole and original work of the Team. Teams are permitted to seek input from others prior to submitting the Team's entry.

Video can be shot on a variety of formats - ranging from high end, high def camera to cell phones or consumer cameras but can not be larger than 100 MB and must be one of the following formats: AVI, MOV, WMV, MP4, MPEG, FLV, 3GP, and 3G2. Entrants can edit video using software on a computer at school, a community center, or at home. (Note: most PC's have a free copy of either Movie Maker or iMovie already installed.) Or, entrants can use an online tool like one of these:
http://jaycut.com
http://animoto.com

Posters must be submitted in .gif, .jpg, or .jpeg format and may not exceed 5 MB.

Videos and Posters can be in any language. Youth are encouraged to show the diversity of the state of California. However, videos submitted in languages other than English must contain subtitles (this includes videos submitted in ASL-American Sign Language). Posters submitted in languages other than English must include the English translation in the poster description.

Youth are encouraged to submit work at the highest resolution possible. Time of entry is determined by Contest Organizers in their sole discretion. Any late submissions will be automatically disqualified.

Videos may also be disqualified for inappropriate language or behavior, which Contest Organizers shall determine in their sole discretion. We would like to be able to show your videos on television, so broadcast "decency" standards apply.

Once an entry is submitted, it cannot be changed, altered or modified. Entry documents, including any written documents, illustrations, video clips, or other materials, become the property of the Contest Organizers and will not be returned.

By submitting an entry, each Youth (and the parent or legal guardian of any Team Members) warrants and represents that the entry, and his or her Team's submission:

  • Does not violate any law, regulation or right of any third party, including but not limited to patent, copyright, trademark, or other intellectual property right,
  • Does not violate any fiduciary relationship or violate any agreement,
  • Is the Team's own sole and original idea, and,
  • Does not contain any virus, bugs, or other deleterious material.

Judging & Awards

Videos and Posters will be pre-screened by Contest Organizers and then posted online for public voting.
Public voting runs from the moment the video or poster is made available online for public viewing to 11:59 p.m. PT on May 6, 2009. Each eligible entry is eligible to receive one vote per person per day during the public voting period. Fraudulent methods of voting including creating multiple accounts and using automated voting systems are strictly prohibited. The 5 submissions in each category with the most votes will be named as "Finalists." If the Contest Organizers feel that the public vote has overlooked any qualified submissions they may also elect up to 5 additional 'Finalists' per category (i.e., Video PSA, Video Short Story or Animation, Video Short Documentary/News, Video Original Spoken Word/Music, and Poster).

Finalist Team Leaders will also be contacted by the Contest Organizers and required to submit proof of age, proof of residency, travel details, and other materials, including full resolution copies (DVD or video, Photoshop or illustrator files, etc). Finalists who do not submit these materials within one week of contact may be disqualified.

Finalists' work will be reviewed by a panel of judges based on the Awards Criteria below. The judges will each rank the finalists. Judge rankings will determine a "Winner" and an "Honorable Mention" in each category (Video PSA, Video Short Story or Animation, Video Short Documentary/News, Video Original Spoken Word/Music, and Poster). Winners will be announced in or about June 2009.

"Winners" in said categories (Video PSA, Video Short Story or Animation, Video Short Documentary/News, Video Original Spoken Word/Music, and Poster) will receive a Wii or ITouch and may be invited to accept their award at an event in Los Angeles. Only one Wii or ITouch will be awarded for Each Contest Category. ARV of each Wii or ITouch $ 280. ARV of travel prize varies based on geographical distance.

All "Honorable Mention" recipients Team Leaders will be awarded four $50 gift cards to Foot Locker or a similar vendor. Only four $50 gift cards will be awarded for each Contest Category. The Team Leader, not the Contest Organizers, will determine how these cards will be distributed amongst the Team Members and submit this information with Finalist Materials detailed above. ARV of each gift card is $50.

In addition to the awards determined by the Judges, one "People's Choice Winner" will be determined by the public voting. This will be the VIDEO that has received the most votes during the public voting. This video will be disqualified from winning any other category. One Wii or iPod Touch will be awarded to the "People's Choice Winner" and may be invited to accept their award at an event in Los Angeles. Only one Wii or iPod Touch will be awarded. ARV of iPod Touch $260. ARV of travel prize varies based on geographical distance.

Additional Contest/Legal Details

Winners/Honorable Mention recipients cannot substitute or transfer prizes, although Contest Organizers reserve the right to substitute prizes of equal or greater value.

Contest Organizers reserve the right in their sole discretion to award a travel prize to all, some, or none of the winners. If trips to Los Angeles are awarded, coach-class airfare (or if reasonable distance to Los Angeles, alternative transportation), hotel, and meals will be included for a limited number of Youth winners and adults to chaperone them. This trip is not guaranteed and depends on several factors, including the ability of Youth winners to travel during the second week of June 2009. Any travel arrangements must be made through the travel agent designated by the Contest Organizers. The applicants, not the Contest Organizers, will initially determine which Team members want to travel to Los Angeles and submit this information with Finalist Materials detailed above. Contest Organizers have the right to make the final determination as to which Team members travel in the event of a dispute.

Before being declared a winner, all Team Leaders (and each Team Leader's parent or legal guardian) will be required to complete, sign and return an Affidavit of Eligibility, Release of Liability, a Travel Release, and where lawful a Publicity Release within the time stated in the notification. Team Leaders are also responsible for returning applicable releases for other Team Members including Release of Liability and Publicity Releases for all Team Members and Talent Releases for any persons who appear on camera.
If documents are not returned by all Team Leaders in the time period specified, or if the documents are returned as non-deliverable, or if a Winner is found to be ineligible or otherwise not in compliance with these Official Rules, the Winner and the Winner's entry will be disqualified, and all rights to the prize will be forfeited.
If this occurs, Contest Organizers may, at their sole discretion, select a Winner from the remaining eligible entries.
Acceptance of any prize related to the Contest constitutes permission for, and Winners' consent to, Contest Organizers and their agencies or assigns to use the entries and the names and/or likenesses of the Team Members for advertising and promotional purposes, in any media now known or hereafter devised, without further notice, compensation, consideration, review, or consent, and without regard to moral rights, unless prohibited by law.
Contest Organizers reserve the right to disqualify Teams from the Contest if Contest Organizers, in their sole discretion, reasonably believes that any Team Member has attempted to undermine the legitimate operation of the Contest by cheating, deception, or other unfair playing practices, or has tampered with any of Contest Organizers' websites, the submission process, the judging process, violates these Official Rules, or acts in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner, or annoys, abuses, threatens, or harasses Contest Organizers, their agents, their assigns or any other Contest participants.
You (and your parent or legal guardian) waive any claims or damages of any kind or nature whatsoever, including but not limited to, direct, special, indirect, incidental, consequential or punitive damages, should Contest Organizers (or Contest Organizers' subsidiaries, affiliates, directors, officers, employees, partners, agents and assigns) pursue, use or exploit, in any manner, your entry in the Contest or any entry from any third party.
CONTEST ORGANIZERS MAKE NO REPRESENTATIONS OR WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, REGARDING ANY PRIZE OR ANY ENTRANT'S PARTICIPATION IN THE CONTEST.
CONTEST ORGANIZERS SHALL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE OR LIABLE FOR ANY LOSS, DAMAGE, COST, OR INJURY THAT ARISES FROM OR RELATES TO PARTICIPATION IN THE CONTEST, THE OUTCOME OF THE CONTEST, OR WINNING OR USE OF A PRIZE, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

  • LATE, LOST, DELAYED, DAMAGED, MISDIRECTED, INCOMPLETE, OR UNINTELLIGIBLE ENTRIES;

Any attempt to deliberately damage the content or operation of the Contest is unlawful and subject to legal action by Contest Organizers or their agents.
CONTEST ORGANIZERS RESERVE THE RIGHT, IN THEIR SOLE DISCRETION AND WITHOUT PRIOR NOTICE, TO SUSPEND, TERMINATE, OR CANCEL THE CONTEST OR ALTER THE RULES FOR ANY REASON, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, IF AT ANY TIME A COMPUTER VIRUS, TECHNICAL PROBLEM, SUSPECTED OR ACTUAL EVIDENCE OF ELECTRONIC OR NON-ELECTRONIC TAMPERING WITH ANY PORTION OF THE CONTEST, OR OTHER EVENT ALTERS OR CORRUPTS THE ADMINISTRATION OR INTEGRITY OF THE CONTEST.
